I Owe It To You – Our Readers
For 18 months, I have been blogging and sharing radiology information on this blog and our YouTube Channel.
When searching the internet for information about radiology careers, there is just too much nonsense and false truths.
Mostly offered by websites only looking to capitalize on unsuspecting traffic and earn advertising revenue.
The problem with those sites is that they aren’t educated in our craft. They say incorrect things and use incorrect terminology like “technician” and “cat scan.”
Radiologic Technologists Deserve Better
RTs have been ignored and treated as less important than nursing and physician counterparts for decades.
The truth is, doctors can’t do their job without the information that licensed imaging technologists provide.
Physicians aren’t trained to capture diagnostic images and rely on competent technologists to do it for them.
Nurses, while trained to provide care for patients, have no training in obtaining diagnostically relevant images in any radiology modality.
337,000+ ARRT licensed Radiologic Technologists are who kept the healthcare machine running during the Corona Virus and are THE SOURCE for diagnosing Covid with a chest xray or CT scan.
Covid-19 Proves My Point
When hospitals began to struggle from a lack of revenue because mandates insisted that only extreme emergencies are allowed into the hospital and elective or non-life-threatening procedures were halted for months, it was radiology staff (among others) who was forced to stay home and use their own hard-earned vacation time, aka PTO (Paid Time Off).
PTO is earned incrementally as employees work long, hard shifts. It is meant to be used to allow employees time off when the EMPLOYEE needs time off.
NOT when the hospital needs to reduce staffing.
Yet by the thousands, technologists from all over the country complied. Some, including my Rad Tech wife, burned every last hour of her hard-earned PTO by force.
You, Radiologic Technologists, Are the Heroes
Not because some cheesy banner hanging outside a hospital says that you are..
You are the heroes because you sacrificed yourself and your friends and families while attending two years of clinical internship that was not only UNPAID work…but paid tuition to perform the free work.
Must studied for the national board exam after completing two years of grueling clinical rotations….and you passed.
You go to work, day after day, exposing yourself to illnesses, ungrateful patients, unengaged management and all the while trying your hardest to capture the best imaging exam possible.
It is for you that I continue to share stories, experiences, study guides, and humor in hopes that you will have a platform where you are appreciated and can continue to grow in your profession.
