TL;DR In 2022, the average salary for radiologist in the United States was $503,564, making it one of the highest-paying specialties in medicine. However, due to rising prices, the salaries of all physicians fell slightly. The field of emergency medicine saw the largest salary increase. There was still a significant wage gap between men and women in the medical field, with men making nearly $110,000 more than women doctors.
According to Doximity’s sixth annual Physician Compensation Report, radiologist earned an average of $503,564 per year in 2022, placing them in the top 10 highest-paid specialties in the United States.
While the average salary for radiologists increased in 2022 from $495,451 in 2021, the report found that the average salary for all physicians remained the same or even decreased by 2.4%.
What About Inflation?
Inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), hit a 40-year high of 9.1% in June of 2022, and “it is clear physician salaries did not keep pace with the high rate of inflation,” the authors wrote.
Because of this widespread inflation, the real income of many doctors fell.
The Doximity report included information from over 190,000 compensation surveys conducted since 2017, as well as data from over 31,000 self-reported physician compensation surveys.
It was conducted between January and December 2022. Full-time U.S. doctors who see patients for at least 40 hours per week complete the surveys.
With gastroenterology and otolaryngology falling out of the top tier, radiology has jumped two spots into the top 10 since 2022.
The report found that neurosurgeons earned the most money, with an average annual salary of $788,313, up from $773,201 in 2021.
With a growth rate of 6.2% and a median annual salary of $385,554, emergency medicine stands out as the specialty with the highest compensation growth in 2022.
Because of “the ongoing demand for emergency health care services,” the authors concluded that this was the case.
Who Pays the Lowest?
The lowest-paying five specialties were all related to primary and pediatric care, with pediatric endocrinology earning the least at an average of $218,266 per year.
A significant gender pay gap was also found in the report, with male physicians earning nearly $110,000 more than their female counterparts.
Compared to 28% in 2021, this means that the gender pay gap will be 26% in 2022.
The authors claim that nuclear medicine was unique in this respect. Except for pediatric cardiology and nuclear medicine, which had a gap of only 3% in 2022, all specialties had gender pay gaps of more than 10%, the findings showed.
Nearly 92% of female physicians reported overwork, compared to 83% of male physicians in the survey, suggesting that pay disparities may contribute to an already high burnout rate among female physicians.
“While there appears to be slight movement in the right direction, physician pay parity continues to be a critical area needing improvement,” they concluded.
